A World Built On Lies

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguiro is book that prompts so many questions but has so little answers. I have only just started the book, though, so I am waiting for the answers to come. This is as much as I understand for now: The main character, Kathy, grew up with her two friends, Ruth and Tommy, at a boarding school called Hailsham. There is something very odd going on at Hailsham, and I can't put a finger on it just yet. But while the story is muddled, all of the characters personalities are clear. It is definitley Ruth's personality that will cause the most trouble.
One reason why Ruth could be dangerous is becuase she can be very inflentual. She can hold power over other people. she was able to trick six kids, including Kathy, into thinking that there was a conspiracy to kidnap thier favorite teacher,  Miss Geraldine. It seemed crazy that anyone would believe such an outragious idea as that, but Ruth could make it happen. She controlled those six kids. And if she felt oppsition, she would "expell" a kid from the group, and they wouldn't even put up a fight. And while this may seem like a silly childish game, people will get older, and then it won't be games anymore. Ruth does not seem like the kind of person who would havde this ability and choose not to use it.
But nobody's perfect. When Ruth's lies are uncovered, she becomes a total mess. It is very hjard to uncover Ruth's lies, though. And everyone who thinks she is lying is to scared to confront her about it. Everyone is too scared, that is, except for Kathy. Not just once, but twice has Kathy exposed the real thruth of Ruth's actions. The wierd thing is, I find it hard to find truth in anything that Ruth says. So if Kathy keeps up what she is doing, Ruth's entire world that she has created for herself will come crashing down.

  1. wow. You made me really want to read this book. The way you described the grip that Ruth had on other people. Great writing and inferences!
